Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, yet many misconceptions prevent people from protecting their hearts effectively. According to Professor Dr. A.T.M. Iqbal Hasan, Consultant Cardiologist at Bangladesh Medical University, understanding the facts is the first step toward prevention.

Myth 1: Heart disease only affects older people.
Truth: Heart disease can affect adults of all ages. Lifestyle habits, stress, high cholesterol, and family history can put even younger adults at risk. Early awareness and healthy habits are crucial.

Myth 2: A heart attack always causes severe chest pain.
Truth: While chest pain is common, many heart attacks present subtle symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, or discomfort in the arm, shoulder, jaw, or back. Ignoring these signs can be dangerous.

Myth 3: Only overweight people get heart disease.
Truth: Heart disease can affect people of all body types. Thin individuals can also have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or artery blockages. Regular checkups are essential for everyone.

Myth 4: Taking medication alone is enough to prevent heart problems.
Truth: Medications help manage existing conditions, but lifestyle changes — balanced diet, exercise, stress control, and quitting smoking — are equally important to prevent heart disease.

Professor Dr. A.T.M. Iqbal Hasan emphasizes, “Education is the first step toward prevention. By knowing the truth about heart disease, you can take control of your heart health before it becomes an emergency.”

He recommends regular screenings, adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle, and staying informed to debunk myths that often lead to neglect. Patients who follow these guidelines enjoy better quality of life, fewer complications, and stronger hearts.
